No matter how you slice it that God of Thunder is one bad-assed-honky-mo-fo!

Free Comic Book Day is a bonafide holiday at my house.  It’s on the calendar, plans are made around it, we gather around the Free Comic Book Day tree, and sing Free Comic Book Day carols.  It’s a whole thing.

One grand tradition that my family shares is looking at all the titles released for FCBD to determine what new books we’ll try.  In previous years, we have seen a number of great titles offered.  The first issue of Kirkman’s Astounding Wolfman was debuted on FCBD back in 2007 and we even got a peak at the Unseen Peanuts that same year.

There are some real gems in 2009.

Marvel’s Avengers by superstars Brian Michael Bendis and Jim Cheung promises to be all kinds of awesome.  It’s a full 32 pages with original art and story providing a handy jump-on point for new readers.  I am just crazy about this incarnation of Thor. Seeing the Odinson laying the smackdown with his Avengers buddies is bound to be hella-cool.

mercysparxSomething that sounds a bit interesting is the new series from Devils Due, Mercy Sparx: Under New Management. It is the first issue of an all-new ongoing series about a lady devil on contract from Heaven to hunt down rogue angels.  That’s gotta be good, right?

FCBD affords us the opportunity to try books we might otherwise pick up.  I’ve seen Mercy Sparx before, just hadn’t grabbed it.  Now’s my chance!

With it’s retro-cover, Fist of Justice looks entertaining.  I don’t know anything else about the book, which is exciting in and of itself.  I come to it with no pre-conceptions.

There are several other books that look good, too!  Paul wrote about them earlier this week.

Free Comic Book Day is Saturday, May 2nd.
