After a long period of silence on the project, some more information recently came out, courtesy of USA Today, on Tim Burton’s new Alice in Wonderland movie. It’s definitely looking creepy, but in that way that his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film did.

Looks like this film is actually more of a sequel to the original story.

The traditional tale has been freshened with a blast of girl power, courtesy of writer Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast). Alice, 17, attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn’t remember.

Among those who welcome her back is the Mad Hatter, a part tailor-made for Johnny Depp as he collaborates with Burton for the seventh time. “This character is off his rocker,” Zanuck says.

Alice in Wonderland finished filming back in December, but has a ton of CG animation and motion-capture, as well as needs to be tranfered into 3-D. It sounds like it might have a bit of a darkness to it, with the news that the Red Queen will have a moat filled with human heads bobbing around.

Alice in Wonderland is set to come out March 5, 2010. Also set to appear in the film are Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar, Christopher Lee as the Jabberwock.  Check after the jump for a ton more pics!
