I know we’ve seen a similar project tried multiple times from DC before, but the sheer talent behind this new project, and the unique publishing strategy, make this a universe I think I may absolutely have to check out!
Starting in 2010, DC will begin publication of a new set of ongoing graphic novels, set in a new continuity, on a new Earth. SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE and BATMAN: EARTH ONE will begin the EARTH ONE line, and will spotlight the most powerful heroes of the DC Universe, with their first years and earliest moments retold in a standalone, original graphic novel format, on a new earth with an all-new continuity.
SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE comes to us from the stellar team of J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis (Superman/Batman). According to writer Straczynski, this will be a modern take on the origins of the Man of Steel, and will be able to differentiate itself from previous versions be being outside of regular DCU continuity, as well as dropping the “Superboy” aspect of the origin most recently seen in Superman: Secret Origins.
Speaking of Superman: Secret Origin, the award winning team of Geoff Johns and Gary Frank (haven’t they won an award? If not, they will!) are teaming up to give us something we’ve all been aching for – GEOFF JOHNS WRITING BATMAN! BATMAN: YEAR ONE introduces a new Batman mythos, and, judging by the designs for Batman and Alfred seen above, we’re in for a nice, new different take on the Dark Knight. According to Johns, the Riddler will be a key villain in the first graphic novel, as well as introducing a new villain, and new takes on Detective Gordon, Arkham Manor, the twisted origin behind Gotham City, and the Batmobile.
Currently targeted at 2 OGN’s per year, the new EARTH ONE line will create its own continuity and with the more European way in which DC is choosing to publish the titles, may be able to appeal to fans of the characters not looking to get bogged down with a monthly floppy. All I know is that I’ll definitely be picking these books up. Hell, I wish I could read them now!
