TMNT: Smash-Up

Also, well not announced, but featured at E3 were the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, Mutant Smash-Up and the remake of the classic Turtles in Time (now with Re-Shelled at the end of it).  Looks like we’ll be able to play it on both Xbox Live and Playstation Network on July 22nd!

Ubisoft today announced that it will be releasing a downloadable game inspired by one of the most acclaimed arcade games of all time – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled. A side-scrolling, four-player action brawler based on the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time Re-Shelled will kick off the Summer of Arcade, and release on July 22 worldwide exclusively on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and later this year on the PlayStation®Network.

“Given that this is the 25th anniversary ‘shell-ebration’ of the creation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles property we’re delighted to partner with Ubisoft to release an updated version of the hugely popular Turtles in Time arcade game,” said Gary Richardson, CEO of Mirage Studios. “The Turtles have fans of all ages, and we’re excited to bring the game back to the long-time fans, as well as introduce Turtles in Time to a new generation of gamers.”

“We’re excited to rekindle the enthusiasm for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time arcade classic with Ubisoft’s enhanced downloadable version,” said Careen Yapp, vice president of licensing and business development at Konami. “The TMNT brand is world renowned and we will continue our commitment to support the endeavor in bringing the next downloadable addition to the franchise to Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network players around the globe.”

“It has been a ton of fun working with Mirage on the TMNT brand, beginning back in 2007 in conjunction with the release of the CGI Turtles film,” said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft. “We’re definitely ‘shell-ebrating’ the 25th anniversary in style, starting with the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled and continuing with the release of an entirely new Turtles’ game – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles™: Smash-Up – later this year.”

Originally released as an arcade game by Konami in 1991, Turtles in Time became Konami’s bestselling arcade title, hailed for its adherence to the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles material. The upcoming re-release will feature updated graphics, but it will stay true to the original feel of the arcade game.

TMNT fans will be able to play an early version of the game by visiting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Party Bus during its national tour. The Party Bus has begun a cross-country 10-city tour that will include playable kiosks of the game, TMNT memorabilia and interactivity for all to enjoy. Not too big on the Smash-Up idea – I miss TMNT Tournament Fighters and would much rather see a game like that, since the whole Street Fighter thing is big again, than a game that more closely resembles Super Smash Bros. But the one I’m super hyped about is Turtles in Time Re-Shelled!  For a trailer of Smash-Up, which features a storyline written by TMNT creator Peter Laird, click here.
