Castle, with Nathan Fillion and Stana KaticI probably don’t need to tell anyone reading this site how awesome Nathan Fillion is.  He’s like the new Bruce Campbell, I think.  Anything this guy touches, whether it’s good or not (coughwhitenoise2cough) is met with heated anticipation by fans.  He’s done us well, so far.  Firefly and Serenity, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Halo 3, Wonder Woman, Drive…and now, Castle!

If you didn’t catch the premiere of Castle last week, don’t sweat it.  you can watch the first episode in full on  Major spoilers for the pilot, minor spoilers for the series follow.

Castle is about a famous mystery novelist, Richard Castle (Fillion), who is so bored with his typical writing that he kills off his most popular character.  At first I thought he was based on Stephen King a little bit, but he’s more of a suspense novelist, like a Dean Koontz or James Patterson (who cameos in the pilot).  During the release party of the final book in his most popular book series, the police find a body killed in the exact same manner as one of the murder scenes from Castle’s novels. NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) brings him in for questioning, and Castle ends up assisting in the pursuit of the killer.  Because Castle becomes so intrigued by Beckett, he decides to base a new series of novels on her, and, since he’s friends with the mayor, ends up being allowed to assist the police on homicide cases for “research.”

I like the way Fillion’s Castle and his daughter Alexis (Molly Quinn) interact, but his mother Martha (Susan Sullivan) reminded me too much of the mother from Two and a Half Men, and WAY more annoying.  Rob  Bowman directed the pilot, and that name should ring a bell for genre fans like us (you know, 33 episodes of the X-Files and the X-Files movie make for a decent resume).

The second episode of Castle comes on tonight at 10 PM, and like I mentioned above, you can always catch up on the first episode here.  Let’s support Fillion so one of his shows makes it past one season!
