I know that rumors usually don’t pan out, but I think we were all hoping this would, despite as improbably as it sounded.  Well, according to Variety, Ridley Scott is attached to return as the director of the next Alien film, which will be a prequel:

The film is set up to be a prequel to the groundbreaking 1979 film that Scott directed. It will precede that film, in which the crew of a commercial towing ship returning to Earth is awakened and sent to respond to a distress signal from a nearby planetoid. The crew discovers too late that the signal generated by an empty ship was meant to warn them.

I’ve heard early rumblings about a potential space disc jockey storyline, or something to that effect.  While I’d prefer to see a sequel to the franchise, rather than a prequel (both AvP films were technically prequels), I’ll take what I can get!
