Paul's 25 Best (and 5 worst) Movies of 2009!

2009 wasn’t the greatest year for movies.  Highly anticipated flicks didn’t match expectations, and the hype engine managed to overhype a ton of mediocre flicks (I’m looking at you, Drag Me to Hell and Laid to Rest).  Still, if you looked hard enough, you would definitely find some diamonds in the rough, and it’s a […]

Paul's Horror Flix: Phobia 2

I really enjoyed the first Phobia (aka 4bia) , a 2008 Thai anthology horror film featuring the work of some of the most popular Thai horror film directors.  It had some great ideas, but seemed to suffer from pretty poor special effects and uneven storytelling. Phobia 2, which actually features five stories, improves on the […]

Paul's Horror Flix: Jennifer's Body

Remember when we leaked to those semi-nude photos of Megan Fox way back when, and how much we were looking forward to Jennifer’s Body because of said photos?  Man…none of that was in the movie. Not that that was the only thing missing in Jennifer’s Body.  However, had that scene been as revealing as those […]

Paul's X-Mas Horror Flix: Santa's Slay!

During the month of December, I thought I would brave the task of trying to watch as many Christmas-themed horror movies as I could get my hands on.  Not as easy task, mind you, as I can think of only one Christmas horror flick that people actually like (the original Black Christmas).  Still, there’s gotta […]

Paul's Horror Flix: Triangle

From Christopher Smith, director of Creep (which I haven’t seen) and Severance (which I saw and mostly enjoyed) comes probably his biggest effort as a writer/director, Triangle.  A mystery/suspense in the vein of films of Crono Crimenes and even with a hint of Lost to it, Severance is definitely the type of film you can’t […]

Paul's Horror Flix: The Skeptic

The Skeptic kind of reminded me of that movie Dragonfly.  It’s creepy, and has some relatively good scares, but the ghost itself isn’t out to hurt anybody, or kill people Grudge style.  That’s not really a spoiler for you out there thinking I just ruined everything – the film resides almost entirely on Tim Daly […]

PHN 2009: Paul visits THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL!

You know what I’m always saying about over-hyped films? Why the hell do people like this film so much?  I mean, for the first hour, literally NOTHING happens.  It’s not creepy, it’s not foreboding, there’s nothing really going on other than watching the babysitter run around the house.  I appreciate the call backs to classic […]

PHN 2009: Paul Watches THE SHORTCUT!

Scary Madison Productions. Just those words should kind of scare you – the combination of Adam Sandler and horror films has wielded an unholy union of direct to DVD horror.  But, sadly, that’s the scariest thing about the film.  Because The Shortcut isn’t really scary or funny, despite attempts at being both. Full review after […]

PHN 2009: Paul Watches THE COTTAGE!

Long story short, The Cottage is a great horror/comedy that fans of films like Shaun of the Dead, Severance, and Evil Dead really need to say.  Hell, any horror fans in general will find a lot to enjoy in this film, with its quirky humor, plentiful gore, and fun storyline.
